I had a Walmart account hijacked and charged a grand and despite bank/Paypal protection was out of a grand for over 2 weeks. Finally credited back (conditionally upon 45-90 day investigation. Not crying over this, just came to realization and took drastic steps (had to sell something I did not want to to ensure no bills or life went on normally for the first time in my life). After changing every password on everything, running intensive scans on computer and finding nothing spyware or virus, I realizes the only way to ensure this never happened again was to change my tech habits. All this happened while switching phone to another carrier, so just want to paint a picture of why I sought to never go thru this again. I switched my Bank of 24 yrs to a local credit union, and debated whether to get a debit card at all, and opted to in case but with one rule. Card will never be used online, and never leave my person period. Second thing I did was switch everything to a prepaid debit card that is auto-billed (had for years with no fee’s (Varo). and lastly removed all MS-Id’s from PC, and set up a phone with NO GOOGLE ACCOUNT!. With the amount of foreign born people working in all service’s businesses and “farming out of customer support overseas”, this problem is only going to get worse! The greatest protection that can be put in place everyone should do at this age!. And of course NO SOCIAL MEDIA APPS ON PHONE OR OTHER APPS that will not work with play store diabled. Why?, they all report back to the respective app stores (APPLE/GOOGLE) as a condition to be in their apps stores. Essentially in one form or another they are like flock camera’s but on your phone. Plus VPN’s on everything now, always on (have to turn off to use amazon or most online banking portals). I will let you know in a year if any more fraud, and how this effects my spam mail (Also only use duckduckgo or Brave browser for internet on anything. It is my belief this will cure the problem, and cut down on spam drastically (PS- Also I stopped using any free email as I have 4 emails accounts paid for to use so no apple/google/other “free” emails accounts used!). Sure the Federal government can and will find me if they desire, but all the other lower tiers should be “blind” when it comes to my interweb goings on. Sorry Barney, took the one bullet in your pocket (Andy Griffin reference). Why this combo? Paid VPN encrypt everything once it leaves your phone, and will no “store” working, the fata spying is cut. The can see where I am, and that I am connected to a server (VPN), but that is it. Not perfect but the best possible unless VIOP cellphone and data only connection. How to get apps?
